Conroy Dance Centre’ is one of Brisbane’s favourite (and best) training grounds for young dancers. With a range of fun classes, your child will learn to dance and sing in an innovative program filled with smiles and laughter. From our tiniest dancers right through to our ‘grown up’ Primary students, everyone is a special & treasured member of our dancing family. Our junior school teachers are all highly qualified, many with early childhood qualifications in addition to dance qualifications.
Classical ballet is the foundation of all dance forms and will maximise technique and longevity in a career of dance. It provides grace, poise, and technique needed to be proficient in all other areas of dance. Ballet classes will help dancers with posture, flexibility, fitness, balance, self-‐discipline, and self-confidence. At Conroy Dance Centre we follow the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) curriculum from Pre-Primary – Grade 5 in the Grades Syllabus, and Intermediate Foundation – Advanced 2 in the Major Vocational Syllabus. The majority of our students take examinations, with over 95% of students achieving a ‘Distinction’ result.
The jazz taught at the Conroy Dance Centre includes the latest technical & commercial styles available in Australia & Internationally. Jazz classes improve flexibility, musicality and are an integral part of dance education for students who wish to become professional dancers. These popular classes are taken to current age‐appropriate music, and whilst remaining stylistically modern, are mindful of suitable movement for the class age and level. The CSTD Modern Jazz exams were designed by Shelle Conroy (one of our directors), and this training method is now being taught to students all over the world. These jazz exams are taken by most of our students – the majority of students gaining an ‘Honours Plus’ or ‘Honour’ result.
One of the major components that sets our dance centre apart from others, is the quality of our song/dance program. Students are taught safe technique, and have hands on use of professional sound equipment, including hand-held and headset radio microphones. Our students’ confidence & competence in this area, coupled with their dance ability, makes them highly sought after for professional contracts. These popular classes are available for students from 4 years of age, and are highly recommended.
Our professional children’s song & dance teams provide a performance platform for students in this area, and for over 25 years have received widespread acclaim for their shows, both throughout Australia and Internationally. Our students have also been featured as resident cast members on National television shows, including ‘New MacDonald’s Farm’ and ‘Pipsqueaks’.
If you have seen a professional musical theatre show in Australia, it is most likely you have enjoyed performances by both current Conroy Dance Centre students and alumni. Our young students have consistently been successful in Musical Theatre auditions, and have performed in ‘The Sound of Music’, ‘Les Miserables’, ‘Strictly Ballroom’, ‘The King & I’, ‘Chitty Chitty Bang Bang’, ‘Annie’, ‘The Wizard of Oz’, ‘Singing In The Rain’, ‘The Jolson Story’, and ‘Fiddler On The Roof’ plus many more. Additionally many past members of the dance centre have forged successful careers in professional Musical Theatre shows around the world. Conroy Dance Centre understands the importance of Musical Theatre, with performers needing to be strong in dance, singing and acting – a ‘triple-‐threat’. Musical Theatre teaches students to perform truthfully by developing their imagination, concentration and observation skills. Acting technique teaches them how to create and portray characters and understand a range of theatrical texts. Most importantly, musical theatre students learn techniques for integrating acting, singing and dancing for musical theatre performances. Conroy Dance Centre is excited to now offer students the chance to rehearse and perform in two musical productions per year. This is an ideal opportunity to put into practice skills learned developing their confidence and ability to combine singing, dance and acting; becoming a true ‘triple- threat’ performer.
Acrobatics is a form of gymnastic tumbling – cartwheels, walkovers, flips, splits etc. Training in this area increases flexibility, strength, balance, coordination, endurance, timing, body awareness, self-‐discipline, and confidence. The skills learned provide a dynamic inclusion for performance routines. Classes are held on Saturdays, with students taken from 4 years of age. Conroy Dance Centre owns professional acrobatic equipment for these classes, including tumbling mats, springboards and crash mats. Our Teacher Lindi Sciasci, was named Acro Coach of the Year in the recent awards and is a fantastic and caring teacher.
New for 2016, this class will focus on the technique, stretching and curriculum for the CSTD Modern Jazz syllabus. Specific to each exam level, this 30 minute class will be held weekly in conjunction with student’s existing timetable. This will ensure jazz examination work is at an optimum level, and will further extend the student’s jazz work, particularly in the technical and stretching exercises.
